Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Russian Geopolitics

The lecture “Theoretical and Conceptual Foundations of Russian Geopolitics”, delivered by Assist. Prof. Ivan Zarić on May 19, was dedicated to the analysis of the main directions of Russian geopolitical thought and their significance for understanding contemporary international relations.

During the lecture, the participants of the School had the opportunity to become acquainted with different approaches within Russian geopolitics, ranging from the Atlanticist and traditional approaches to Eurasianism and the neo-Eurasian concept. Through an overview of the ideas and views of theorists who shaped Russian geopolitical thought, discussions focused on questions of Russian identity, its position between Europe and Asia, and the concept of Russia as a distinct civilizational and geopolitical space.

The lecture also covered the fundamental principles of the neo-Eurasian concept, its phases of development, and the ways in which these ideas are reflected in contemporary international relations. In addition, the discussion addressed relations between Russia and the West, the idea of a multipolar world order, as well as the place of the Balkans within contemporary Russian geopolitical thinking and security challenges.
