On 29 September 2026, the Centre for Geopolitical Studies (CeGI) organised a lecture entitled “Artificial Intelligence in the Strategic Documents of Major Powers: A Geopolitical Analysis of the United States, China and Russia.” The lecture was delivered by Dr Vanja Glišin, Research Associate and Head of the Centre for Geopolitics at the Institute for Political Studies in Belgrade. The lecture addressed the growing importance of artificial intelligence for contemporary security and its place in the strategic thinking of major powers. Through the examples of the United States, China and Russia, different approaches to the development and application of artificial intelligence were presented, as well as its significance for national security, technological development and military capabilities. Particular attention was devoted to the integration of the civilian and military sectors in the development and application of artificial intelligence. In the case of China, civil-military fusion and the possibility of applying the same models, chips and data in both the civilian and defence sectors were presented, while the examples of the United States and Russia illustrated their approaches to linking the development of artificial intelligence with national security and defence. The lecture also opened broader questions concerning the future of warfare, ethical dilemmas and the consequences of the increasingly intensive application of artificial intelligence in the field of security. The lecture was followed by a substantive discussion with the audience, during which additional questions concerning the role of artificial intelligence in contemporary security and geopolitical processes were also considered.
